Description
Printed map. Three visual scales [270 mm = 12,000 Toises or 6 Lieues communes de France]. Pictorial relief and hachures. This sheet depicts the dedication of the map to Joseph II, Holy Roman Emperor (1765-1790), ruler of the Hapsburg monarchy and Austrian Empire, also known as "The Great Reformer." Cherubs engaged in the Arts and Sciences surround the scene. Joseph is surmounted by the imperial eagle. A military encampment is depicted in the background complete with tents, cavalry, and supply wagons. A Robert Clifford ownership label is affixed to the verso. Acquired by McMaster University in 1969 as part of the Lord Cholmondeley Collection.
